RICK PARK,
ARTIST
Paintings, drawings, and sculpture
by Rick (Eric) Park
News: Eric Park is now going
by his original name, "Rick Park,"
since moving to Arcata, and now makes appearances and creates art as
"Rick Park."
EXHIBITIONS:
July 2010: "Last
Days of the One Lane Bridge"
sold in May 2010. It will join the collection
of Cathy Rohm of Greenwood, CA, who is already the owner of "Patriotic
Toothbrushes". Cathy has arranged a small exhibit of Rick's paintings
at
the KFOK radio station during the month of July 2010. KFOK is reachable
by
internet radio. The exhibit is in the Sierra Foothills, in a radio
station building in Greenwood, CA (above Auburn and near Cool). Rick
has significantly revised seven of the paintings, including the
prize-winning oil painting (he changed a perspective detail on the
right-hand side of painting). List of paintings to be
included in exhibit: "La Rosita"; "Josie at the Columbian"; "Libation";
"Perishable Fruit"; "Black-Tailed Prairie Dog"; "Vermilion Kingfisher";
"Last Days of the One-Lane Bridge"; "River Otter"; "Old KHSU Building
(Wagner House)." Sculpture to be
shown: "Proof of Evolution" and "Disproof of Evolution."
Rick exhibited 4 of his sculptures on
April 25, 2009 at
Gist Hall Parking Lot at Humboldt State University. The four sculptures
were accepted into the "Green Campus" exhibit of "Eco-Art", a part of
the Sustainable Living Arts & Music ("S.L.A.M.") Fest. The four
pieces: "Spring"
(see below)
consists of recycled materials, in this
case a flower pot, a truck spring, a lazy susan plate, and a "beanie"
robin. Previously exhibited at Weaverville Art Gallery, and named
"Gallery Owner's Favorite" in that show. "Proof of Evolution
III:
Triceratops Horns Fossil," (see below) a driftwood tree-root and
part
of the "faux fossils" theme, from the Jurassic Period, "compressed by
massive geological forces" into a three-horned piece about one foot in
each dimension (Triceratops heads were actually about 8-10 feet
across). "Pygmy
Steer/Peace," another driftwood piece, about 3" long,
age 1.5 million years, an extinct life-form 'fossil' from a miniature
form of cattle, unearthed near Beijing, and mounted on a board embossed
with the Chinese ideograph for "peace", with an antique
frame. Altogether, it is about 6" by 5." Finally "Ghost Surfer,"
two pieces of Lake Tahoe-area gnarled rootwood scraps conjoined into a
headless figure, mounted on an antique trophy plaque. About 24" high
but it rises at a slant. New title suggested by SLAMFest coordinator
Robin Ray.
Rick Park exhibited at Haight-Ashbury Library's "40 Summers of Love 'n
Haight" Art Exhibit. Rick's painting,
"Patriotic Toothbrushes" was displayed there, and has since
been sold. He has also recently sold 2 other paintings: "Mlle Gachet nue au
Piano" (the Van Gogh
tribute/nude at the piano) and "Tofu in LA"
(portrait of Tiffany).
Rick finished "Obama Can," a
painting
of
Barack
Obama
on a vegetable can, on the day before the
election. The idea when it was painted was, if he loses,
it's a compost can; if he wins, then it depends on how he does. If he
does a good
job: more decorations or dried flowers. If he screws up, fails to get
us out of Iraq, etc., then it's still a compost can. Before that, Rick
completed a landscape painting that had been in the works
for some months. "Last Days of the One Lane
Bridge"
(since sold) is a view of the old bridge with a background of forests
and mountains.
The bridge, near Hayfork High School in Trinity County, has since been
replaced with a modern 2 lane bridge. The painting is a companion to
his twice-published poem of the same name (published in Peoples Press,
a monthly publication from near Redding, and in his book, "The Sad
Songs Contest,"
ready to go into its 4th Edition). The painting is accompanied by a
framed parchment copy of the poem of the same name and
a photo of the original one lane bridge.

Rick completed
his first-ever oil painting in January 2010, a simple front
view of the Wagner House, in which there are the offices of KHSU radio.
They were having a contest. Rick entered the painting
and won a prize, but the main thing was to
learn how to use oils. It was exhibited during Eureka
Arts Alive! and a similar event in Crescent City. KHSU
has scanned the painting and will sell prints of it to their listeners.
Revised since this photo (he changed a perspective detail on the
right-hand side of painting). c.2010. Click on photo
